Architecture and UX design

In 2007 i enrolled for the best Architecture course at “Università La Sapienza” in Rome.

During my years of study i started working as a freelance graphic designer and i was able also to design mock-ups of simple devices.

Project after project skills was growing supported also by my studies. I could start see the similarities between UX and Architecture.

In my very very very honest opinion architecture could be defined as the mix between functions, best way to fit them and creativity.

What i learned after graduation is that “functions” and “creativity” lay inside everything a human being can use. This affects all things and a former architect can see clearly when design respects functions and when it is not.

A building is not different from a digital product. Both of them need to be designed with the user in mind (user centered design, mmm i remember something from Le Corbusier… ). When a space is hidden like the info you are looking for in that website, people start to feel stressed and not at their comfort, designer did not thought enough to the users needs, or some times he did not thought at all.

In the physical architecture side a management workflow generally follows a waterfall method, from step to step project progress go forward till completion. This is not what happen for digital products: think about an app. In the market there are a lot of competitors whatever you want to do, if you choose a waterfall method it will get you stuck somewhere after project completion because there is not possibility to edit what you have done. What companies generally prefer instead is an agile method, based on cycles that can be used to learn from mistakes and shape a better product.

A metaphor that i like to use thinking about UX agile approach is: in UX, design cycles phases are like infinite lives in a videogame, while building something in the physical world offers You just one hardcore life to play.

Generally HR team members do not know about architecture basics, of course, so when they see my resume they start thinking that i have not deep knowledge about UX or graphics cause i studied architecture, but the real thing is that a mobile app. or a website or a digital product in general is not so different from a space and how people use it, so is not so different the way to develop it.
